UniversalCare has extensive experience in all facets of operating LTC and Retirement Homes. Our experience also includes the successful operation of Interim LTC beds, specialized Hemodialysis Units (the only such kind in Ontario) and Memory Care Units. We take great pride in working with partners such as the Local Health Integration Network and other stakeholders.

OUR HISTORY

UniversalCare History

UniversalCare was founded in 2007 with a belief that there were vast improvements that could be made in the field of senior care. With a long history in the industry behind him and the qualifications to accompany his experience, Joseph Gulizia opened the doors of Richview Manor, our first senior residence, in 2008. Since then we have grown to 17 residences and taking care of 2089 residents.

The Executive Team

President and CEO Joseph Gulizia

Joseph Gulizia has been involved in operating Long-Term Care, Retirement Homes and Continuing Complex Care facilities since 1997. His holds a Certificate in Long-Term Care Administration from Ryerson University.

Joseph is a recipient of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award (2012), City of Vaughan Volunteer of the Year Award (2013) and the 2015 Business of the Year - Young Entrepreneur Under 40 - Vaughan Chambers of Commerce. UniversalCare has been nominated for the 2017 Professional Services Business Excellence Award by the Vaughan Chambers of Commerce.

Vice President of Quality & Clinical Services

Maria Cherbel R.N.

Maria supports the areas of MDS RAI, HOBIC, Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Annual Reviews, Staff Development, Leadership and Accountability. She is a certified Administrator in Long Term Care, has been a Registered Nurse for over 26 years and holds a Diploma in Nursing Leadership/Management Program. In 2017, Maria was awarded “The Clinical Protocol Excellence Award” by the Ontario Long Term Care Association.

Vice President of Operations & Building Services

Michael Griffin

With over 20 years of experience, Michael has held many roles in the healthcare industry. For 10 years of his career, he held the Administrator position at Mackenzie Health LTC, where he successfully managed Ontario’s most complex Long-Term Care Home. As the Vice President of Operations and Building Services, he brings a wealth of experience that allows us to support the creation of new senior residences and efficiently operate our current properties. Michael prides himself in providing our clients with personal, dedicated and dynamic service. 

Vice President of Financial Services

Donna Miller

Donna has over 20 years of accounting experience and oversees the financial management, budget process and year-end audit of over 20 facilities including long term care, chronic care, independent and assisted living homes. She holds a Business Administration diploma and is completing Certified General Accounting designation from CGA Ontario as well as a Bachelors of Commerce degree at Athabasca University.

Julie Mann

As Director of Senior Living, Julie is responsible for the management and leadership of our General Managers and the Directors of Care. This includes compliance with the Retirement Home Regulatory Authority and adherence to the respective legislation and regulations. Julie is a Registered Practical Nurse and is a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Amalia Aiello

Amalia has been an accomplished health care leader with 22 years of experience in Long-Term Care. She earned her Bachelor of Social Work from Ryerson University and completed professional training in evidence-based therapeutic approaches, providing therapy and counselling services.  A long-standing member of the Ontario College of Social Worker and Social Service Workers.  She is currently a Director of Senior Living.  Amalia is an inspiring multi-stakeholder and empowering leader, who is genuinely committed to seniors through the implementation of best practices. Through Amalia’s unique and highly effective partnerships and relationship building ability she is competently able to meet the ever-changing needs and demographics of the Long-Term Care landscape. Passionate about resident care and safety she is focused on ensuring quality care and service for all the homes in her region.

 

Associate Vice President of Administration & Physiotherapy Services

Angie Gulizia

Angela is a Registered Nurse with expertise as an ER Nurse, Community Nurse, LTC Charge Nurse, as well as a Gerontology Specialist. She has successfully implemented Harvard’s Hospital Elder life program and the NLOT program through the Central LHIN. She is a member of the College of Nurses and the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.

Director of Corporate and Building Services

Elisa Carbone

Elisa’s journey with UniversalCare started 10 years ago. As a registered practical nurse, she built strong relationships with residents and families alike and cultivated a desire to dedicate her career to caring for our aging population. Her devotion to the meticulous care of residents is what sparked her promotion to Manager of Quality Improvement and Infection Control, where she spent 5 years refining the structure of care within the facilities to ensure the highest level of support for residents.In 2016 she took on the role as Corporate Support Consultant. She was then promoted to the Director of Corporate and Building Services and works closely with each of our homes, ensuring that UnivsersalCare is on the cutting edge of all available technology in LTC, for the utmost level of safety for residents and staff.

Director of Clinical Services

Sara Ryan

Sara Ryan is a Registered Nurse with over 15 years of experience in Long-Term Care including 5 years’ experience as a Director of Care. She is certified in the P.I.E.C.E.S. geriatric program, RAI-MDS and Advanced Wound and Skin Care. Sara has demonstrated extensive dedication and perseverance as she led the Long-Term Care Home team in becoming a Designated Best Practice Spotlight Organization through collaboration with Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO). She is focused on improving, standardizing, and evaluating the quality of care that our residents receive, by developing innovative models of care. Sara is an active member of RNAO and the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Director of Clinical Services

Lyana Nava

Lyana has been a Registered Nurse since 1994 with the clinical practice in various fields and has been involved in Long-Term Care for over 15 years. Her Long-Term Care experience positions of Informatics Nurse/Assistant Director of Care, Credentialed RAI-MDS Coordinator, Director of Care, Administrator, Corporate Clinical Manager and presently the Director of Clinical Services with UniversalCare Corporate Team. Her passion for working in such a high demand environment has enabled her to develop a higher level of standards for the complex nature of Long-Term Care services, pristine attention to details in an environment that leaves little room for error. Lyana is a result oriented and supportive of the clinical team in mentoring and developing skills related to compliance, IPAC, pharmaceuticals, human resources, clinical health record and detailed accurate reports. Lyana continues to maintain current competency with College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) in addition to being a RNAO Best Practice Champion.
